Approximately 7500kms of canals crisscross France. For centuries the inland waterways provided a lifeline for communication and transportation, evolving into an efficient network linking the provinces with major trade centres. The shallow draft canal barges plied these canals, transporting everything from wine and grain to timber and iron. Although today the commercial barges are predominantly a dying breed, the French Navigation Authority continues to maintain its canals for their historic importance and scenic beauty.

Today we see many of the working barges having been converted into floating hotels of varying degrees of luxury. One of the French ‘classic’ routes, is the Burgundy area, and it’s in southern Burgundy where you will find a very special barge, owned by a married couple who are themselves specialists in creating beautiful and memorable experiences. With their engaging personalities, it’s no wonder this barge is one of the most popular deluxe barges on the canals. Anyone who enjoys an elegant yet casual atmosphere will love this product. Many obviously do as I learnt it’s repeat clientele is the envy of many other barge owners and operators across France.

This luxury barge can carry up to a maximum of six people, in pleasurable surroundings for a six night all inclusive holiday. The barge cruises through the heart of Burgundy on tranquil canals and the scenic river Saone. A crew of five will take care of your every need. Each day gourmet food is expertly prepared by a qualified Cordon Blue chef and all meals are paired with superb regional wines, most of which are Premier and Grand Cru.

Some cruise highlights are:

All-inclusive with open bar, wines with lunch and dinner, gourmet cuisine, guided excursions
A tour of a Cote d’Or vineyard in vintage WWII jeeps
Visit a truffle producer and learn about the “hunting” of these delicacies
Walk and shop the historic center of Dijon and visit the Grey Poupon mustard shop
Drive the famous “Route du Grand Crus” and wine taste at a private estate
Drive to Beaune and visit the famous Hôtel-Dieu, Hospice de Beaune. Take time to shop this beautiful town or enjoy a special winetasting
Explore the 13th century Chateau de Commarin
Bike and/or walk the towpaths along the canal in the beautiful Ouche Valley.
With such beautiful sites and stunning waterways on offer, what better way to enjoy them by sipping a Grand Cru on the barge’s teak deck or from the hot tub whilst watching the world slowly pass by. So maybe gather up some friends, and celebrate life. Once on board, you’ll feel so at home you’ll never want to leave.
